Soil Sampling

SOILS:

A representative sample will consist of a composite of several sub-samples taken from the area under investigation. Equipment for sampling may consist of spade and bucket, auger, or a soil sampling tube.

The quantity of each soil sample submitted must be sufficient for appropriate analysis selected. Most analyses can be carried out on one pint ( 500 cc) of soil. Exceptions include A05 (one liter), A06 (2 liters) and M04 (three gallons). Accuracy REQUIRES adequate sample size.

If a soil tube is used, place a series of cores in a plastic bag. If a spade or a trowel is used, collect the sample in a plastic bucket, mix and then place a representative sample in a plastic bag. The best method of identifying the sample is to place the closed plastic bag in a paper bag and write the identification on the pager bag. NEVER, write information on paper and place in contact with moist soil.

Typical sampling depths:

Turf

0 - 15 centimeters

Landscape shrubs

0 -30 centimeters

Rose beds

0 - 30 centimeters

Annual and ground cover beds

0 - 15 centimeters

Raised beds, pots, misc. Planters

Full depth

Trees — sample from

15 - 45 centimeters

       Possibly another from

75 - 120 centimeters

Field crops, vegetable and shallow rooted

0 - 30 centimeters

Field crops, deep rooted

0 - 45 centimeters

In all cases, it is desirable to discard the surface inch of soil in order to avoid possible debris which is not part of the actual root zone. Where drip irrigation is used, take the sample directly beneath the emitter. Discard the upper 1 inches of surface soil.
